San Jose State’s showdown with Boise State on Saturday has been canceled due to positive COVID-19 cases and contact tracing within the Boise State program, the Mountain West announced hours before kickoff.

The game will be declared a no contest and there are no plans to reschedule.

“We arrived in Boise on Friday and learned this news Saturday morning,” said San Jose State Athletics Director Marie Tuite. “Our players and coaches were looking forward to this game with great anticipation. It is a big disappointment to everyone that we are not able to play this game.”

Boise State Interim Athletic Director Bob Carney issued the following statement on Saturday following the cancelation of the game:

“Because of a delay at the lab, our results from Thursday’s tests didn’t come back until late yesterday, which meant our staff were contact tracing until late last night. Under the circumstances, and with limited numbers within specific position groups, our coaches, administration and medical personnel met this morning and determined that it was not in the best interest of our student-athletes’ safety and well-being to play today’s game. I am disappointed for the student- athletes, coaches and fans, both at Boise State and San Jose State, and am hopeful the Broncos will be able to return to the field this next week against UNLV.”

The Spartans (4- 0) were in a position to play their highest- profile game in years against Boise State (4-1 overall, 4- 0 Mountain West). It would have been SJSU’s first game on a major over-the- air network (FOX) since 2006, with a shot at its first 5- 0 start in 81 years.

The winner of Saturday’s game would have remained in position to reach the Mountain West championship game Dec. 19, as both teams are undefeated in conference play. The Mountain West’s top two teams by win percentage in conference games will face off in that game. Nevada currently sits atop the Mountain West at 5- 0.

This is the second week in a row San Jose State will not play due to the coronavirus. San Jose State’s game against Fresno State was canceled due to contact tracing in the Fresno State program.
