Council meeting will bring in the new, honor those departing
The proverbial changing of the guard will take place during Tuesday night’s Benicia City Council meeting as a new mayor is ushered in along with the swearing in of other city officials.
Outgoing Mayor Elizabeth Patterson will be recognized and thanked for her service during the 7 p.m. assembly of the council. Patterson has served three terms as mayor since 2007, and will be remembered for her environmental stewardship, love of community, razor- sharp intellect that spans several disciplines, a snazzy hat collection, and for being a thorn in the side of local oil refinery Valero, at times.
Incoming Mayor Steve Young won his race with 50.70 percent of the vote, edging out Vice Mayor
Christina Strawbridge, who came in second.
Strawbridge was backed by Valero, which pumped nearly $250,000 into the race, despite the fact that Strawbridge says she did not ask for nor want the assistance from the oil company. The infusion of Valero cash made for a contentious battle borne out on social media and in local circles.
New Councilmember Trevor Macenski will be sworn in at the 7:30 p.m. assembly of the council, after a nail-biter of an election that put him ahead by only 126 votes over local arts advocate Terry Scott. Incumbent Councilmember Tom Campbell received the most votes and will accept re- election on Tuesday as well.
City Clerk Lisa Wolfe will also accept re- election, as will Treasurer Ken Paulk.
