December 8, 1919 - December 11, 2020

Vallejo, CA

Hannah Beury Schmutz passed peacefully in her home just days after her 101st birthday. Hannah was born December 8, 1919 in Alderson, WV to Harry and Josephine Rowe, one of five children. After high school, Hannah was accepted into the Temple University’s Nursing Program in Philadelphia. While there she met the love of her life, Melvin A. Schmutz, who was also in medical school there. After her training they were married in 1940. Her husband became an intern at Southern Pacific Hospital in San Francisco and while there they had a daughter, Suzanne. While a resident physician, Melvin was called by Uncle Sam to serve in the army overseas. At that time, Hannah worked at the women’s penitentiary in Alderson, WV as an RN.

After the service in 1946, Mel and Hannah settled in Vallejo, CA and Doctor Melvin opened his practice of medicine there. While in Vallejo, they had two sons, Robert and Steven. They joined the First Baptist Church and were very active serving as deacon and deaconess. Hannah loved baseball and the San Francisco Giants from the moment they came to California and had many occasions to cheer them on at games and spring trainings.

For 50 years Hannah was active in the Sutter Solano Hospital Guild where she started a knitting group that knit hats for every newborn baby. She also had a lead role in the Hospital Guild Thrift Store.

Melvin and Hannah had 51 wonderful years of marriage before his passing. She rejoiced in being able to spend time with her family during the holidays and reunions where her brothers and sisters and their children would all gather to celebrate. She also treasured spending time with her two grandsons, Michael and Christopher and great-grandsons Melvin and Kurtis.

Hannah’s desire to remain in her home until the end of her life was thankfully borne out thanks to the help of neighbors, caregivers and her grandson Michael and his wife Kristen.

She is survived by her three children, Suzanne of Oakland, CA; Robert and his wife, Morgan of Portland, OR; Steven and his wife, Charmaine of Selma, OR. Grandson, Michael and his wife, Kristen of Vallejo, CA. Granddaughter, Megan and Brandon of Rocklin, CA. Great-grandsons, Melvin and Kurtis of Vallejo, CA. Greatgrandchildren Dylan and Savannah of Rocklin, CA.

Hannah’s compassion generosity and love touched so many lives and she will be dearly missed.

Viewing will be on Wednesday December 16 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Twin Chapels Mortuary in Vallejo. A service will be held the following day at the family cemetery for the immediate family. Please visit the online tribute at www. twinchapelsmortuary.com
