To Times-Herald photographer Chris Riley:

The Times Herald’s vibrant spread of your pictures and stories in Visions of 2020 is a tribute to your work. I plan to hold on to this Year in Review because some of your best pictures are showcased.

I love your story and have always loved your pictures. I have wondered about the courage it takes to do your job. To coin your phrase “What a strange trip around the sun.”

Yes, a thousand times yes, you have done your job as a photojournalist. You sacrifice your safety and health by showing up in the middle of tense, difficult, and dangerous situations to take pictures that enlighten, document and shine a spotlight on current events.

I also appreciate the pictures that reflect the fun, beauty, and wonderful people captured in your images.

One picture I remember is of a lone walker enjoying a most human moment on a leaf strewn autumnal path.

Also the pictures of local heroes are commanding. For example, the great picture of Lisa Gutierrez-Wilson as the Grinch is plain fun.

You are a first responder made all the more serious and dangerous by the pandemic, police actions, and turbulent political unrest. You grab your camera and head out to photograph and document to keep alive our First Amendment right of freedom of the press.

Thank you from an appreciative subscriber who has enjoyed your work immensely.

Oh yes, you make a difference. Some light has gone out in the world, but never doubt that you have contributed greatly to stoking the light back into focus.

The next trip around the sun is filled with hope because of first responders like you.

Happy New Year to you, Chris!
