Hauser, Metcalf lead Cal Maritime golfers at San Diego tournament
A final round of 76 with three birdies from Cal Maritime senior Josh Hauser and a 78 with four birdies in five holes from freshman Nate Metcalf highlighted the San Diego Christian Invitational, which wrapped up on Tuesday.
Hauser and Metcalf both finished in the top 35 leading the way for the Keelhaulers. Hauser finished tied for 28th place and the Washington native Metcalf kept up with his veteran teammate right behind him at 33rd place for a tie. The effort helped the Cal Maritime men’s golf team solidify eighth place out of ten teams at the San Diego event.
Despite weather conditions becoming a factor in day one with it dropping to as low as 36 degrees and raining on Monday, Hauser kept his optimism afloat and rallied his teammates behind him during a prolonged 10 hour day.
“Monday was a battle,” Hauser said. “We faced cold weather and were soaked through our gear about two hours in. The entire day took 10 hours. The course was a lot shorter but with a lot of trees. As a team, we battled and John had a great 79 with some other good scores from the rest around 80. Personally, I felt unprepared for that type of weather and did not swing the club at my best but Tuesday was a different story.”
Jake Banich (255), John VanDixhorn (261), and Ricky Castillo (296) wrapped up the Keelhaulers score.
With two tournaments down and just one more to go in this shortened COVID season, the men’s golf team will look to finish strong at Embry-Riddle for the Championships on April 11-14.
