Men’s team to open regular season April 24

The Vallejo Omega FC men’s soccer team is inching closer to its 2021 season opener.

The 18-and-over team will host a “friendly” with Contra Costa FC at 6 p.m. on Sunday at Dan Foley Park. Attendance is free for the game against Contra Costa and a food truck will be there for fans who get hungry.

“It’s free and open to the public,” said Omega co-head coach Jonathan Tzun. “We’ll require that fans wear their masks and socially distance. We’re hoping to get people to know who we are. It should be a lot of fun.”

Omega is expected to debut against Salinas in the season opener on April 24, also at Dan Foley.

Tzun said the team has been practicing for a month and he thinks the players are getting better and building chemistry.

“At this point, I think we know our good areas and our weaknesses,” he said. “We know our advantages and our potential

weaknesses getting exposed but I don’t see many.”

The 25-man roster was finalized in February. The roster includes 14 Vallejoarea players — eight from Vallejo High, four from Bethel and two from MIT.

Omega played another “friendly” last week against an under-23 men’s team from the East Bay and won 2-1.

This opponent might be a step better as both Vallejo and Contra Costa are part of the National Soccer League’s new Pacific Conference. For more information about the league, check out nslpacific.com/. For more information about Vallejo Omega or sponsorships, email vallejoomegafc@gmail.com

It will be a busy week for Tzun as he also coaches the Jesse Bethel boys soccer team. The Jaguars will play a nonleague game against Napa at 6 p.m. on Monday at Corbus Field.

He said the high school team should have about 1516 players and he’s trying to schedule at least seven games. Dates with rival Vallejo are set for May 18 and May 20 at Corbus Field.
