Trump accuses Baldwin of purposefully shooting Halyna Hutchins

'In my opinion, he had something to do with it,' Trump said

Former President Donald Trump has finally hit back at one of his major enemies in American culture: Alec Baldwin, whom he suggests intentionally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of his upcoming movie.

“In my opinion, he had something to do with it,” Trump said of Baldwin in a radio interview Thursday with conservative host Christ Stigall, Newsweek reported. “But if nothing else, how do you take a gun, whether it’s loaded or not loaded, how do you take a gun, point it at somebody that’s not even in the movie, and just point it at this person and pull the trigger, and now she’s dead?”

Baldwin, who won an Emmy for spoofing the former president on “Saturday Night Live,” shot and killed Hutchins on Oct. 21 on the set of his western movie “Rust,” which was being filmed near Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The veteran actor, 63, has called Hutchins death “a tragic accident,” and he and his wife, Hilaria Baldwin, have said he has been left heartbroken and traumatized by being involved in the accidental killing of a woman he called “a friend.”

Hutchins was shot when Baldwin was rehearsing a gunfight scene. He was handed a revolver that was being used as a prop. After Baldwin was told the gun was safe, he reportedly pointed it in the direction of Hutchins and director Joel Souza, demonstrating how he planned to do a crossbody draw in an upcoming scene. The gun discharged a suspected live round, killing Hutchins and injuring Souza.

Santa Fe County authorities are investigating to find out how a live round ended up in the gun, as well as whether there was any negligence by Baldwin or crew members responsible for handling the gun.

Trump’s reaction to Hutchens’ shooting has been anticipated by people in right-wing circles, given the public animosity between him and Baldwin.

In addition to satirizing Trump on “Saturday Night Live,” Baldwin has long been outspoken about his liberal politics and has routinely blasted Trump’s policies and actions as president. In a recent video, posted on Instagram, Baldwin called Trump a “sociopath.”

Trump said he believed Baldwin could be responsible because he’s a “troubled guy” and “there’s something wrong with him.”

“I’ve watched him for years,” said Trump, who like Baldwin, long lived in New York and moved in elite media and social circles. “He gets into fistfights with reporters. I mean, everything he does, he’s a volatile guy. He’s a nutjob.”

Trump claims he would have handled a gun differently if he was working on a film set and handed a weapon.

“If they handed me a gun, I would never point it at somebody and shoot it, you know,” Trump said. “I don’t care about checking the gun. They hand you a gun you’re not going to point it at somebody.”
