ACHS boys basketball team tops Maria Carrillo in opener

- Times-Herald staff report

The American Canyon High boys basketball team beat Maria Carrillo 70-46 on Tuesday in nonleague play.

The game shifted in the Wolves’ favor on a 26-3 run that spanned the end of the first quarter and the entire second quarter. American Canyon led 40-14 at halftime.

The Pumas cut the score under 20 briefly in the fourth quarter but American Canyon senior Max Parmigiani (12 points) ended any hopes for a comeback by burying a 3-pointer from the corner with three minutes to play.

Senior Khai Curry (6 points) set the defensive tone all night long by smothering ball handlers, diving for loose balls, and disrupting the Pumas’ offense. “He changes the game defensively,” said coach Scott Hayburn. “I’ve never seen a high school player that is that excited to completely shut down any team’s best player. He’s a problem.”

Senior Mikey Pierce led the Wolves in scoring with 24 points (18 in the first half) including four 3-pointers. Senior Raekwon Bell added a career-high 14 points off the bench.

The Wolves will travel to Rodriguez on Friday and will host Fairfield on Saturday.
