Farm installation, garden tour on tap for Sustainable Solano
In recent years, Sustainable Solano has placed an emphasis on food forests, a low-maintenance form of gardening that is less dependent on watering and more dependent on plants relying on one another and other natural elements for growth.
The grassroots organization has an opportunity for the public to not only see some of the food forests already in place in Solano but also learn about how to install them and take in some permaculture concepts as well.
All of this will be covered in three separate events over the next few weeks.
The first is a permaculture installation along Pleasants Valley Road. Sustainable Solano, in conjunction with Pleasant Valley School, is installing a demonstration site at a local farm that will be used for educational outdoor experiences for the school. The public is invited to attend a hands-on workshop to learn about capturing rainwater, building healthy soil and how to plant trees as well as smaller plants. Checkin begins at 8:30 a.m. May 28, and installation work will begin at 9 a.m., with lunch served at 1. People can register at eventbrite. com/e/pleasants-valleydemonstration-permaculture-site-installation-tickets-338530894017. The location will be announced upon registration.
The second event is a food forest installation at Fairfield Community Seventh Day Adventist Church, where Sustainable Solano is seeking to create a food garden to provide nourishment to underserved communities in the area. Along the way, participants will learn permanent beds, hedgerows and permaculture. The event is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 30 at 1101 E. Tabor Ave., Fairfield. To register, go to Eventbrite. com/e/fairfield-marketgarden-and-food-forest-installation-day-1-of-2-tickets-339269182257.
For those who want to see examples of existing food forests, Sustainable Solano will be hosting a tour of sites in Vacaville and Fairfield. Attendees can learn about the types of foods that grow best in the area as well as techniques to install one in your own garden. The tour will take place 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 4. To register, go to Eventbrite.com/e/fairfield-vacaville-annual-demonstration-food-forest-tour-tickets-328955192837. The starting location will be provided upon registration.
