Mustangs drop Trumann to remain third in 4A-3

- Fred Conley

Forrest City is two games away from closing out the regular season basketball conference schedule.

Tuesday, playing at Trumann, the Mustangs ran their overall season record to 17-11 and improved to 9-5 in the 4A-3 conference with a 50-40 win over Trumann.

Tuesday's win keeps the Mustangs in third place in the conference standings behind league-leading Blytheville and second place Brookland. The Mustangs have two games remaining, at Batesville Southside tonight and hosting Wynne Friday for Senior Night at Dwight Lofton Mustang Arena.

A win over both remaining teams and a split of the final two games, would lock down the No. 3 seed for the Mustangs into the upcoming regional tournament. Two Forrest City losses would give Highland (8-7 in the conference in fourth place) a shot at tying the Mustangs for third in the conference but would still leave the Mustangs with the third seed into regional since the Mustangs have already defeated the Rebels twice this season. Highland has just one game remaining.

The Forrest City Lady Mustangs played at Trumann Tuesday, but as of press time, there is no final score from the game. The Lady Mustangs will play at Pocahontas Thursday night and host Wynne Friday for Senior Night.

Jordan Williams tossed in 20 points, and Jamarie Anthony helped with 18 points and 10 rebounds to push Marianna Lee past Barton 63-46 Tuesday in the final regular season game for the Trojans (20-5, overall and 14-0 in the 2A-6).

Tuesday's win was the 13th consecutive victory for the Trojans under first year head coach and former Osceola head coach Vernon Wilson.

"Tuesday was a great effort by my guys," Wilson said. "Besides Williams and Antony, Nihjal Collins helped with nine points and LaQuincy Allen finished with eight. Both teams are ready to begin district tournament play and hopefully a trip to state for the varsity team."

Marianna has already clinched the junior varsity and varsity conference titles.
