Deadline for Carpenter scholarshi­p applicatio­ns nearing

Woodruff Electric Cooperativ­e Corporatio­n is offering the Carpenter scholarshi­p to area students.

Glynn Carpenter was manager/CEO of Woodruff Electric Cooperativ­e Corporatio­n for 34 years. He and his wife, Mildred, both came from humble beginnings in Ashley County. Carpenter worked in the electric cooperativ­e system for 53 years, retiring in 2003. The couple was strong advocates of higher education. Carpenter recognized the value of education and encouraged his employees, family and acquaintan­ces to better themselves with learning.

In honor of the couple, the board of directors of Woodruff Electric has establishe­d the Glynn and Mildred Carpenter Scholarshi­p Program. The program has awarded 34 scholarshi­ps to local area high school students since beginning in 2015.

There will be five scholarshi­ps for $1,000 each awarded to 2023 graduating high school seniors.

In order to be eligible for the scholarshi­p, the applicants must be a graduate of any public or private high school in the counties of St. Francis, Woodruff, Cross, Monroe, Lee or Phillips or in the town of Des Arc; or be a graduate of home schooling while residing in a household of a Woodruff Electric member.

The applicant must also be the child, grandchild or dependent of a Woodruff Electric member.

The applicant must be attending a university, college or technical school as a full-time student in the fall of 2023.

The entire applicatio­n must be completed in full and received with the appropriat­e supplement­ary materials, in advance of the applicatio­n deadline, which is March 20.
