Mustangs, Lady Mustangs win conference track titles

Forrest City added to their collection of track and field titles Tuesday, winning both sides of the nine-team Class 4A Region 3 conference track and field championsh­ips held at Pocahontas.

The Lady Mustangs secured the title with 34, top 10 finishes, which included five, first-place events.

In the relay races, the Lady Mustangs won the 400-meter, ran second in both the 800 and two-mile relays and finished third in the mile, qualifying for the state meet in all four.

In the sprint races, the Lady Mustangs ran 1-2-3 in the 100, 200 and 400-meter events with Mariah Barnett, Chandon Hester and Nia Williams, all three qualifying for the upcoming 4A state meet. Avienne Applewhite ran sixth.

Hester was first to break the tape in the 200-meter sprint, followed by Williams and Alanah Burkes. Barnett held on to finish sixth. Hester, Williams and Burkes qualified for state in the 200-meter.

Running the 400-meter sprint, Daziyah Mays took first, Hester ran second and Williams was third, while Barnett finished 11th. All three will run at the state meet.

Nevaeh McRae was the lone Lady Mustang in the 800-meter run, finishing seventh.

Charnell Hoof ran second in the mile-run finishing just behind Brookland, to qualify for the state meet.

Adrianna Carter ran to an eighth-place finish with Alayiah Shaw running eight seconds behind to finish ninth and Kimiyia Young taking 10th, one second behind Shaw.

Forrest City took fourth and fifth place in the two-mile distance race with Jamiya Buchanan and McRae.

Burkes ran fifth in the 100meter hurdles while Serenity Powell finished seventh and Courtney Bean came in 10th and Kemora Jefferson 13th.

Burkes returned to run fifth in the 300-meter hurdles, with Powell taking sixth almost a full minute behind. Bean ran 12th.

In the field events, Hoof won the high jump with a finals leap of four feet, eight inches to qualify for state. Teammate Francesca Colbert cleared the bar at four feet, six inches for sixth.

Barnett landed second place in the long jump finals, leaping 15 feet, five inches qualifying for the upcoming state meet. Williams held on to take fifth with a 15-foot leap, while Applewhite finished in a tied for 11th and Jefferson tied Trumann for 18th place.

Colbert took 10th in the triple jump finals just ahead of 11thplace Burkes. Jefferson landed 13th and Mays took 14th.

Hoof competed in the discus

with a toss of more than 53 feet to take 14th place while Aryianna Ford finished 15th. Jaztin Rodgers had an effort of just over 60 feet to finish 19th while Mays landed 24th with throw of 53 feet.

Ford took fifth in the shot put behind a 1-2-3 finish by Brookland. Mays held on to take 17th place in the 21-person competitio­n.

On the boys side of the conference meet, the Mustangs rang up 42 top 10 finishes, winning all four relay events and qualifying for each one at the upcoming state meet.

All total, the Mustangs won nine of the events at the nineteam conference meet.

Forrest City took second, third and fourth in the 100meter sprint with Jacori Buchanan, Nehemiah Stone and

Kevin Young, running behind Blythevill­e's Jatavion Wilson who won the event.

Buchanan and Stone's finish qualified them for the state meet.

Jayvein Edwards ran ninth in the 100-meter.

Monsieur Gaines, Kyman Lee and Young all qualified for the upcoming state meet, finishing 1-2-3 in the 200-meter sprint. Edwards landed fourth in the 200. Gaines also qualified for the 400-meter sprint with a winning time of 52.32. Darian Jordan ran fourth, Jordan Ware fifth, and Buchanan seventh.

Mustang senior Derrick Burton ran fourth in the 800meter run with freshman Zamarrion Patton taking fifth and freshman Deandre Taggart sixth. Junior Oneal Winfrey ran 10th. Burton finished second in the mile run to qualify for that

event at state while Taggart finished fourth and Patton fifth.

Burton qualified for state with a second-place finish in the twomile run, with Winfrey finishing eighth and Taggart ninth.

Kylin Williams and Kyman Lee both qualified for the 110meter hurdle event at state finishing first and second at conference. Keelan Brisber ran sixth while D-Arius Tripp finished seventh.

Williams also qualified for state in the 300-meter hurdles finishing first with teammates Lee and Tripp finishing third and fourth and Brisber fifth.

Lee qualified for state with a third-place effort in the high jump while Young qualified for the long jump with a secondplac­e finish. Nehemiah Stone landed sixth in the high jump clearing 10 feet 11 inches, with

Williams holding on to finish 14th.

Lee was first in the triple jump with a leap of more than 42 feet, to qualify for the state triple jump finals. Brisber also qualified for state, finishing third at the conference meet. Kylin Williams and Vonterrius Williams finished seventh and eighth.

Roderick Williams was the lone Mustang competitor in the discus, with a throw of more than 85 feet, while Young completed a throw of almost 39 feet in the shot put and Jayveon Appleby had a toss of 33 feet and Joshua Patillo finished 23rd.

Both Forrest City teams will return to Pocahontas Tuesday, April 30, for the Class 4A State Meet.

The annual Meet of Champs is scheduled for Wednesday, May 8 at Lake Hamilton.
