Serigraph artist John Wesa is the featured artist of the month at the Trinidad Art Gallery, along with mask artist Donvieve.

Wesa graduated with an art degree (in cinema and screen printing) from Humboldt State University in 1976 and has since memorialized landscapes and the flora and fauna of the local area.

“I need to be a mechanic, an electrician and, most of all, an alchemist,” Wesa said. “I love the interaction of shapes and colors. When things are going right, the image achieves a hypnotic vibrancy. It’s fun to see it take its first breaths and begin to live.”

His passion for serigraphy is the excitement of making multiples that are also individual originals. He enjoys seeing his work pop up all over the world, representing a shared value and experience.

“Psalm 29” is his latest serigraph, a limited edition of 38 prints and some proofs. Of the exuberant image, Wesa says, “Psalm 29 is my effort to illustrate the ever-divine, yet tumultuous joy of God’s creation, it’s ever renewing power and the gladness we should feel being part of it.”

The Trinidad Art Gallery is located at 480 Trinity St. The gallery is now open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Just like old times, visitors will be greeted by a gallery member. For now, visitors and members must wear face masks. For more information, call 707-677-3770. To preview gallery artists’ work, visit trinidadartgallery.com.
