Donations sought to help with Hugo’s medical care

When 5-month-old Hugo arrived at Sequoia Humane Society in September, staff at the no-kill animal shelter in Eureka weren’t sure the kitten would survive.

“He was very sick and it was apparent that he would need treatment,” said Kelsey Sampson, who handles community outreach for Sequoia Humane Society, which is now looking for donations to help pay for the young tabby cat’s medical care.

“Fundraising has been a challenge during the pandemic,” Sampson said, “however, we are very fortunate to be in a position to continue helping pets in our community and beyond. The public has been a huge help through this time when we have reached out.”

After Hugo arrived at Sequoia Humane Society, he was quickly transported to a local veterinary hospital.

“I am told he was near death when we got him,” Sampson said. “He had to be medicated and monitored for a while once he returned (to the shelter) to help him get over his illness.”

The total cost of Hugo’s medical care came to $1,644.54, she said. To make a donation to help cover those costs, go to https:// www.facebook.com/donate/274444180356688.

“In order to continue to be able to rescue cats in need like Hugo, outside support is vital,” Sampson said. “His medical care exceeds our average animal care cost, which means help with his medical will make a huge difference as we help other pets in need.”

She added: “The community is a huge help when we reach out for fundraising. I’m not sure how we would help so many cats and dogs with higher medical costs without outside support.”

Once Hugo is medically cleared, he will be ready to go to a new home. Those interested in adopting Hugo (or any of the other animals at Sequoia Humane Society) are encouraged to fill out an application at https://sequoiahumane.org.

“Hugo is a snuggly sweetheart,” Sampson said. “Upon first meeting him, you wouldn’t even know he had been through so much. He is going to be a wonderful, loving companion to whoever is lucky enough to take him home.”
