Elect Liza Welsh For Eureka’s Ward 4
Scott Greacen wrote in to support Liza Welsh’s opponent, Scott Bauer (“Support Scott Bauer for Eureka City Council,” Times-Standard, Oct. 17, Page A4). His view is important to me as a prominent local environmental advocate but I couldn’t disagree with him more. Both Welsh and Bauer are progressive and would be valuable members of the Eureka City Council, but there is a significant problem. Eureka does not have a primary and both are running for a seat where there is also a prominent conservative Democrat running who would not advocate for progressive policies, Matthew Owen.
I hope progressive voters in Eureka’s Ward 4 consider the whole picture and this includes the fact that Liza, even with a competitive field of Democrats, won endorsements by all three local progressive/labor organizations, the HCDCC, the NCPA (which grew out of the Sander’s candidacy) and the CLC. In effect, she swept the “endorsement” primary of political and labor organizations
Liza is not only the best candidate for this position, she is the candidate we need to rally around to avoid a more conservative person being elected with less than half of the votes. With Bauer’s credentials and given we need candidates for the 1st, and 4th Supervisorial Districts (depending on where in the 4th Ward he lives), I hope Scott Bauer considers ceding this race to another great progressive option, Liza Welsh, and building relationships with local political, activist and volunteer groups for his, and our, future.
