It’s unlikely to be a white Christmas

Santa Claus is unlikely to battle any snow as he makes his deliveries later this week. It’s not likely to be a white Christmas for most of Humboldt County, a National Weather Service meteorologist said Sunday afternoon.

Meteorologist Matthew Kidwell said there is the remote possibility of light snow in higher elevations that are sparsely populated, but mostly the coming week is expected to bring some more rain and a few gusts.

“We have a quick storm bringing some rain late Monday afternoon and evening,” he said. “It’s probably going to be quick and gone by Tuesday morning.”

He said Tuesday afternoon through Thursday could have “pretty nice weather.”

Monday’s rain will come with slightly higher temperatures that could hit the 50s along the coast. As the storm moves out of the area, cooler temperatures will return. Tuesday could see highs in the 40s, Kidwell said.

Wednesday and Thursday are projected to hit the mid- 50s, the National Weather Service website stated for the Eureka area. Garberville could see temperatures as high as the low 60s. Overnight lows in inland areas will be closer to freezing while coastal areas will see lows in the high 30s to low 40s.

Winds will increase on Tuesday on the heels of Monday’s storm.

Kidwell noted it could get gusty along the ridges and in Kneeland.

On Christmas Day, a storm system could hit the area, bringing minimal amounts of rain.

“It’s probably going to be like a lot of the other weather systems we’ve had,” Kidwell said.
