Photo contest benefits Sequoia Humane Society

“We have opened up the contest to all pets furry, scaly, feathered or finned. Our primary participants are cats and dogs, but we have had some fun surprise entries. The ones that come to mind are Andre, the opossum, and ‘Alpaca Crew,’ the crew of alpacas.” — Kelsey Sampson, Sequoia Humane Society

The Sequoia Humane Society is sponsoring a “Pets of Humboldt Holiday Photo Contest,” with all proceeds benefiting its medical fund, which supports health care and treatment for the shelter’s pets.

“Usually in December, Santa is able to visit us and take photos with pets and families from the public, but this year with COVID-19 in our midst, Santa could not visit. As a way to still spread some cheer, we decided to launch a photo contest,” said Kelsey Sampson, who handles community outreach for the nonprofit, nokill shelter in Eureka.

“After a little bit of research,” she said, “we found GoGo Photo Contest had worked on photo contests with other animal shelters, so they helped us bring an easy to use photo contest to Humboldt County.”

To date, there have been more than 70 entries of cats, dogs and other critters, including an opossum and some alpacas.

“There is no limit to the number of entries, but the earlier you enter the better, so that you can rack up as many votes as you can,” Sampson said.

She added: “We have opened up the contest to all pets furry, scaly, feathered or finned. Our primary participants are cats and dogs, but we have had some fun surprise entries. The ones that come to mind are Andre, the opossum, and ‘Alpaca Crew,’ the crew of alpacas.

“We are inviting everyone to participate, so we have pets adopted from all over participating in the contest,” Sampson said.

The contest and voting are open through Saturday, Jan. 16, at 11:59 p.m. Visit gogophotocontest.com/sequoiahumanesociety to enter, vote or share the contest on social media.

“This contest is such a fun fundraiser because it invites everyone in the pet world to participate,” Sampson said. “There has been a lot of gloom over the last year, but seeing some of the pet family members that got everyone through it all has been so heartwarming. The photos being posted are so fun to look at, and watching the contestants fight for the top has been interesting to watch unfold. I can’t wait to see who the top three are on Jan. 16.”

Prizes will be awarded to the top three vote earners. Prizes include two “Dog Prize Packs” and one “Cat Prize Pack.” Winners’ images will be posted on Sequoia Humane Society’s social media pages and website and will be featured in the spring edition of the Sequoia Humane Society newsletter, “Animal Tracks Quarterly.”
