Pederson out as Eagles HC

The Philadelph­ia Eagles have fired coach Doug Pederson, less than three years after he led them to the franchise’s only Super Bowl title.

Pederson was 42- 37-1 in five seasons. He led the Eagles to two division titles and three playoff appearance­s before going 4-11-1 in 2020.

Pederson met with owner Jeffrey Lurie last week and again Monday.

Pederson’s loyalty to his coaching staff and frustratio­n with the front office’s interferen­ce was a major issue, according to a person familiar with the decision. The person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the conversati­ons, said Pederson and general manager Howie Roseman weren’t on the same page regarding many personnel moves.

STEVE HENDRICKSO­N, FORMER CAL, 49ERS PLAYER, DIES » Steve Hendrickso­n, a feisty linebacker at Cal in the late 1980s who went on to play seven seasons in the NFL, died Friday at the age of 54.

Hendrickso­n was a two-sport star at Napa High before going to Cal.

No cause of death was given. According to a story in the Napa Valley Register, Hendrickso­n said that he sustained an estimated 20 concussion­s during more than a decade in college and pro ball.

Hendrickso­n played 100 games over seven NFL seasons with five teams.

RAIDERS RB JACOBS WON’T FACE DUI CHARGE » Las Vegas Raiders player Josh Jacobs won’t face a driving under the inf luence charge in his single-vehicle crash last week near McCarran Internatio­nal Airport, authoritie­s said Monday.

Blood test results showed Jacobs’ blood-alcohol level did not reach the 0.08% level required to pursue a drunken driving charge, prosecutor Eric Bauman said.

Bauman and Jacobs’ attorneys, Richard Schonfeld and David Chesnoff, said the 22-year- old running back still has a March 8 court date on a failure to exercise due care traffic violation related to the crash.

and former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops are among the 13 former players and coaches who make up the latest College Football Hall of Fame class.

The National Football Foundation announced the newly elected hall of famers Monday. This class will be inducted in December.

NHL TO HOST 2 OUTDOOR GAMES IN LAKE TAHOE » The NHL played outdoors in the shadow of the Green Monster at Fenway Park, on consecutiv­e days at Dodger Stadium and Yankee Stadium, and at Chicago’s Soldier Field.

The NHL announced it will hold two games on an outdoor rink set up at Edgewood Golf Course in Stateline, Nevada.

Vegas will play Colorado on Feb. 20 and Boston faces Philadelph­ia on Feb. 21 on a temporary rink set up on the 18th hole at Edgewood, site of the annual American Century Championsh­ip celebrity golf tournament.

2 MORE GAMES CALLED OFFOVER VIRUS-RELATED CONCERNS » The NBA called off two more games because of COVID-related and contact tracing issues on Monday, and a person with knowledge of the situation said the Miami Heat were preparing to be without “at least five” players for the next several days because of possible exposure to the coronaviru­s.

Monday’s game in Dallas between the Mavericks and the New Orleans Pelicans was postponed by the league, as well as today’s matchup in Chicago between the Bulls and the Boston Celtics. The league’s general managers were meeting Monday to discuss the league’s current virus situation, with involvemen­t from the National Basketball Players Associatio­n. The NBA’s board of governors will meet today on the topic.

GONZAGA, BAYLOR REMAIN ATOP AP POLL » Gonzaga and Baylor were the top two teams in The Associated Press preseason men’s college basketball poll. After eight weeks of twists and turns, that hasn’t changed.

The Zags received 63 of 64 first-place votes from a national media panel in the poll and the Bears had the other one. Villanova, Texas and Iowa rounded out a top 5 that remained the same from last week.

WSU WOMEN EARN 1ST AP TOP 25 RANKING » Washington State entered The Associated Press women’s college basketball poll for the first time – ranked at No. 25 on Monday.

The ranking comes a day after Washington State (7-1) beat then-No. 7 Arizona 7169 in overtime. The Cougars have won five of their first six Pac-12 games for the first time since the 2013-14 season.

R& A SAYS NO PLANS TO AWARD THE OPEN TO TRUMP’S TURNBERRY » Donald Trump’s ownership of Turnberry will prevent the Scottish course from staging the British Open for “the foreseeabl­e future,” the chief executive of the R& A said Monday.

Turnberry hasn’t hosted the tournament since it was bought by Trump in 2014.

“We had no plans to stage any of our championsh­ips at Turnberry and will not do so in the foreseeabl­e future,” R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers said.

Slumbers’ comments came a day after the PGA of America voted to take the PGA Championsh­ip event away from Trump’s New Jersey golf course next year.
