“In 2020, we made 373 blankets and delivered 366 of them to children served by local agencies. Given the pandemic, we were pleased that we were able to help so many children.” — Nancy Corral, chapter coordinator

Humboldt Project Linus recently reached a milestone, tallying up 1,000 new, handmade blankets made since forming in May 2018.

The 1,000th blanket, a quilt made by one of the volunteer “blanketeers,” was presented, along with several other blankets, to WIC (Women, Infants and Children), one of 21 local agencies serving children up to age 18 receiving Humboldt Project Linus “blanket hugs” since the chapter’s founding in Humboldt County.

“In 2020, we made 373 blankets and delivered 366 of them to children served by local agencies. Given the pandemic, we were pleased that we were able to help so many children,” said Nancy Corral, chapter coordinator, adding that in the first three months of 2021 she has already delivered 65 blankets.

Corral is particularly proud of the chapter’s achievements in maintaining the creation and distribution of blankets to children, via the participating agencies, throughout the pandemic. Humboldt Project Linus has been unable to hold in-person monthly meetings or Sew-along Saturdays since February 2020. Instead, a core group of 20 blanketeers continued to sew, knit and crochet at home, often sharing photos of their quilts and afghans over Zoom or through “The Blanket Chronicles” blog on the chapter’s website before the blankets were delivered to local agencies.

Humboldt Project Linus has received financial support from local businesses and organizations, as well as from community members. These funds enable the chapter to purchase batting, yarn and other blanket-making supplies to help blanketeers complete their projects. This support helps the Humboldt chapter provide blankets to children in Humboldt County, reinforcing the national, nonprofit Project Linus’ mission to “provide a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized or otherwise in need.”
