The Humboldt-Del Norte League has released its updated calendar for the spring 2021 baseball and softball season.
The sports are the next to be rolled out under the California Department of Public Health’s youth sports guidance, as these are allowed under the current red tier safety level.
Humboldt County has been in the Red Tier since Feb. 23.
The 15-game season will start April 20, when Hoopa visits Arcata and South Fork plays at Ferndale.
April 21 will see more teams take to the diamond. Fortuna will travel up to Del Norte, Eureka will play at McKinleyville and St. Bernard’s will host Arcata.
All weekday games are scheduled for 4 p.m. Meanwhile, Saturday doubleheaders are programmed to start at 11 a.m.
The competition calendar’s last matchday is May 22.
After a one-day delay due to snowy weather in Montana’s capital, the Lumberjacks beat Helena’s Carroll College in a doubleheader scheduled to accommodate the postponed game.
Haley Suter got HSU on the scoreboard in the first inning with a single. HSU added three to their count in the following chapter and kept on piling on the runs with five scored in the fourth inning for a partial 9-0.
Carroll put two on the board in the fourth and another two in the final chapter but it was not enough to overcome the large deficit and a final three HSU runs in the final inning.
At the plate, five Lumberjacks recorded two base hits in the decisive victory. Danica Grier’s efforts brought five runners home, while Jenna Sobrero swung for three RBI.
Emily McAdams took the win in the first game of two, with a 12-4 final score. The Jacks pitcher held the Saints to three scoreless innings out of the abbreviated five-inning game. She retired five batters via strikeout and gave up three walks.
Game two saw Humboldt State’s Karen Di Dio return to the circle, keeping the Saints off the scorecards through the fifth inning in a 7-3 win for the green and gold. The pitcher put away three batters and walked four in her full-game efforts.
Sophomore Grier continued showing off her batting skills with a double and a home run during the second clash for 3 RBI in the second game and a daily total of 8 RBI. Fellow sophomore Izzy Starr contributed to the Jacks’ cause with another 3 RBI of her own.
HSU, now with a 5-1 record, will be traveling to North Idaho College for two sets of doubleheaders on April 1 and 2.
