Community chips in on vaccination efforts, spots failing tsunami alarms

- By Rita Carole Rita Carole is a member of McKinleyville CERT, a part of the Humboldt County CERT organized under the Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services.

Emergencies and disasters are a part of life in California as well as all over the country and world.

There are Community Emergency Response Teams around Humboldt County that have been trained in Disaster and Emergency Preparedness to help others during times of need. People who take the CERT trainings are not required to join a CERT but will have the skills, information, and know-how to help take care of their family, neighbors, and friends when the need arises. If you have an interest in a free training, the best way to begin would be by contacting Linda Nellist, chair of the Humboldt CERT Coalition — humboldtcert@gmail.com.

On March 24, team members from CERT, along with many other agencies including McKinleyville and Humboldt Bay Fire, participated in the Tsunami Drill to help check on the functional status of the alarms in Humboldt County. As a result, the county is now aware of which alarms need repair or replacement. In other CERT news, the Blue Lake team is scheduled to help with clerical duties at the county vaccination sites and looks forward to its participation in making sure all community members who want to be vaccinated will have that opportunity.

While CERT members are trained for disasters, they are also utilized by their sponsoring agency for a variety of other needs. Again, if you think you have an interest in being involved, please contact Linda at the above email address.
