Trees felled to make way for senior center’s new home
Seniors in Fortuna are benefitting from some tree work that is being done on the future new home of the Fortuna Senior Center at Rohnerville Road and Gulliksen Drive.
Four trees were felled by Collings Tree Service and now volunteer members of the Fortuna Senior Center are making firewood and delivering it to seniors in need.
At the site on May 8, Fortuna Senior Center President Marsha Hays said, “These senior center members having been making wood all week and delivering it to seniors in Fortuna. They borrowed log splitters, and have volunteered all of their time for this project.”
Volunteer Jim Stanfield said he estimated a total of 15 to 20 loads of wood will be delivered. Other volunteers helping make the firewood include Bob Johnson, Kent Wrede, Lester Reynolds, Leon Comerer and Gary Markegard.
Revised plans for the Fortuna Senior Center at the new location are expected to be turned in to the city of Fortuna this week and will be considered by the Fortuna Planning Commission at a later date.
Whitchurch Engineering Inc. has drawn the plans for the building at the new location, and DCI Builders has been selected as the contractor.
“Everyone all along has been great to work with,” Hays said. “We are very excited about this new location and the plans for the building.”
Plans call for a one-story building to include a large multi-purpose room, exercise room, several classrooms, two lounges, restrooms and a kitchen.
