Soroptimist fundraiser
‘Grab-n-Go’ box meal proceeds will be used for scholarships
Soroptimist International of Arcata is holding a “Grabn-Go” box meal event on June 9.
“Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we needed a fundraiser whereby we would have as little contact with the public as possible. In a brainstorming session, this idea was thrown out,” said Soroptimist International of Arcata President Patti Clinton.
Three options are available for the meal: a pulled pork sandwich, chicken salad or kale salad. All meals — prepared by Cassaro’s Catering — include sides and dessert for the price of $15 each.
“Christine Wright has been in business for over 15 years,” Clinton said. “She has been a favorite of ours for our personal events as well as Soroptimist events. When we approached her about helping us, she gave us a more than generous offer. We are so grateful that she is available and that Cassaro’s is so well known for its excellent food and service.”
Soroptimist International of Arcata is a volunteer organization with a mission to provide women and girls access to education and training to achieve economic empowerment.
“We have been serving the community for over 67 years,” Clinton said of the Arcata group. “We are always delighted when we hold our events and see so many new and familiar faces come out to support us, especially during this pandemic.”
Amid the ongoing health crisis, Soroptimist International of Arcata’s annual scholarship tea — which has been taking place since 1956 — has been postponed for another year. This second “Grab-n-Go” box meal fundraiser — the first was held in October 2020 — will raise funds to support annual scholarships for college-bound seniors from the Northern Humboldt Unified High School District.
“We are dipping into our reserves to provide the minimum of awards to graduating seniors. … After this ‘Grab-n-Go’ fundraiser, we hope to award more students from the same pool of applicants,” Clinton said.
Box meal orders need to be placed by June 5. Pickup will be on June 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 4 to 6 p.m. at St. Mary’s Leavey Hall, 1730 Janes Road in Arcata. Orders and payment can be sent to S. I. Arcata, P.O. Box 388, Arcata, CA 95518. Payment through Venmo is available. For more information, email siarcata@soroptimist.net or call Patti Clinton at 707-822-9494. Over the past year, Soroptimist International of Arcata has been staying busy with a variety of activities — including holding weekly Zoom meetings.
“We are honoring a Girl of the Month from Arcata High School and McKinleyville High School, having them join us via Zoom,” Clinton said. “We have also made no-sew blankets that we have donated to Hospice, helped Betty Chinn with donations of blankets and pillows, and various other projects that don’t include a lot of face-to-face with our members and the public.”
