‘A delight to be around’

Evie raised 10 puppies and is now looking for her forever home

Evie first came to the Humboldt County Animal Shelter in October 2020. She’s still at the McKinleyville facility, seeking a loving, forever family.

“It would be amazing to finally find her a perfect home. We do our best to provide great care to all of the animals at the shelter, but there is nothing like getting them a home of their own,” said Andre Hale, animal control and facilities manager, Humboldt County Animal Shelter.

Evie — a 3-year-old pup that’s likely a mix of Dutch shepherd and pit bull terrier — was found as a stray last fall in Dinsmore. Evie was heavily pregnant when she arrived at the shelter, Hale said.

“She needed to go to a foster home for birthing and raising her puppies,” Hale said. “Our collaboration with Redwood Pals (Rescue) helped us to facilitate her being placed into a foster home.”

In time, all of Evie’s 10 puppies were adopted.

“Evie was a fantastic mom. After her duties were done, she was moved to another foster home to put on a few pounds before heading back to the shelter to go up for adoption; that was back in December,” said Mara Segal, volunteer at the shelter and a founder of Redwood Pals Rescue.

Evie — who is the longest resident at the shelter at the moment — is still waiting to find the right adopter, Hale and Segal both say.

“We just haven’t found that perfect match,” Hale said. “She is high energy and is looking for someone who wants an active dog. … Evie does not do well with smaller dogs, but could do well in a home with a dog that is more her size. She would be just as happy being the only dog.”

Segal said, “Evie loves to be with people and is very affectionate. She is smart, playful and sweet. She likes all sorts of toys and will make you laugh when you watch her play. Evie would do well with an active family as she is very fit and loves to stretch her long legs.

“She is a delight to be around and has such a wonderful personality,” Segal noted. “Evie is an inquisitive, smart, fun 3-year-old who is always up for an adventure. She has been great with children of all ages. … Her herding instincts make her less of a candidate for homes with cats, birds and livestock. Evie gets along with other dogs and has been meeting some of her neighbors at the shelter. She is an active player and can hold her own with the big boys.”

Evie weighs about 63 pounds, is spayed, micro-chipped and current on her vaccinations. She knows a few commands, such as sit, down, shake and others. An ideal home for Evie, according to the animal shelter’s Petfinder link — https://www.petfinder.com/dog/evie-49954426/ ca/mckinleyville/humboldtcounty-animal-shelter-ca866 — would include a good-sized, secure yard where the dog could play with toys and confident, patient handlers interested in continuing her training.

Folks interested in meeting Evie should first fill out an adoption application at https://humboldtgov.org/2658/Animal-Shelter. After that, call the Humboldt County Animal Shelter at 707-840-9132 Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to make an appointment to meet her.
