Wet weather to taper off this week
Humboldt County will see a dry week with mild temperatures following brief showers Monday evening and continuing into Tuesday morning
Monday and Tuesday’s rains are expected to reach a total of onetenth of an inch, with temperatures hovering around 60 degrees during the day and 40 degrees in the evening for the rest of the week. The remainder of Thanksgiving week is forecast to be sunny, dry and without any strong winds.
“The next chance of rain is not looking likely anytime soon,” said Jonathan Garner, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Eureka.
There was a frost advisory for inland Humboldt County on Sunday morning, but no hazardous weather is expected Monday through Friday.
Precipitation is low across northwestern California, and will likely remain so for the rest of the month, according to a tweet from the National Weather Service.
Humboldt County received 2.8 inches of rain so far in November, which is approximately normal, according to Garner.
Garner noted that the previous months of rain helped with the drought, but the majority of Humboldt County continues to experience severe drought, with a slice in the northeast corner undergoing extreme drought. Roughly 15% of the county, mostly centered around the coastal regions, is in moderate drought.
Humboldt County is 6.81 inches below the normal annual rainfall, and 2021 is the 44th driest year for the county in 127 years, according to statewide data.
“We’re still in a drought, but there’s improvement noted. Now we’re in a moderate drought that’s improved over the past couple months due to recent rainfall,” Garner said.
