For December, the Old Town Art Gallery in Eureka is showcasing the work of two guest artists, Carolyn Laumann and Elaine Y. Shore, and one featured artist, Veronica Daw.

An Arts Alive! reception will take place Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Laumann — who moved to Humboldt County 15 years ago — started painting with her daughter-inlaw during the pandemic.

“I paint what I love — forests, dogs, wild animals, and local scenery,” she said. “I really like creating things that make people smile, and that they can identify with.”

Shore has been creating art since childhood. Last year, when she was unable to do her ceramics due to COVID-19 closings, she decided to paint Christmas cards for a few friends with an old set of watercolors. She had so much fun doing the cards that she became interested in learning to paint with watercolors and has been painting her whimsical, primarily floral paintings ever since then.

Daw grew up in Humboldt County and has lived in the area most of her life.

“There is a beauty here that I treasure, and like many others who live here, I’m inspired to create,” Daw said. “Lately, my focus has been on miniature paintings made into jewelry. I like to use a lot of sparkle and I paint on glass so you see the painting in reverse. Each piece of jewelry is an original mini painting.

“Most of my paintings are of the ocean or the woods or sunsets or the night sky,” she said. “They are of the things I love in this area and I hope that others are reminded of the same when they look at my art.”
