Soroptimists honor ‘Girls of the Month’
Soroptimist International of Eel River Valley has recognized Karlianne Powell, Konstance Miller and Mira McDavitt as its latest “Girls of the Month for Citizenship.”
Powell, who recently graduated from Ferndale High School, has been active in sports, participating in junior varsity and varsity volleyball, varsity tennis and varsity softball.
In FFA, she participated on the creed, impromptu and extemporaneous speaking teams. She is part of the meats evaluation team and won a first-place award at UC Davis at a meat evaluation beef grading event.
Powell is also a member of Girl Scouts and a kitchen staff volunteer at a youth summer camp. She has also put in 100 volunteer hours with 4-H and has worked with a sock drive and with Every 15 Minutes.
She plans to attend Butte College and then the Taft College dental hygiene program. She hopes to pursue a career as a pediatric dental hygienist in Humboldt County.
Miller is a 2022 graduate at East High School. She has volunteered at a blood drive and for Food for People’s Backpacks for Kids program. She was East High’s representative at Soroptimist meetings, providing monthly reports about activities at the school. Miller has also been East High’s Student of the Week and Citizen of the Week.
She has future plans to move out of Humboldt County, but for now plans to stay in the area and get a job.
McDavitt recently graduated from Fortuna Union High School. She was the Black Student Union president for the past two years and was founder/president of the Women’s Empowerment Club during her senior year. She has also been a Creeks Club member and Link Crew leader. She has received awards in English language composition and in the Redwood Writing Contest.
In 2021, McDavitt was given the School Equity Leadership Award. She’s also been involved with Youth Engaged in Philanthropy, the Youth Climate Action Summit and Humboldt County Listening sessions.
McDavitt plans to attend UC Berkeley and then enter the field of research medicine.
