Redwoods sweeps Yuba in home opener
The College of the Redwoods softball team extended its win streak to four straight games after sweeping Yuba in their home opening doubleheader on Wednesday at the Bear River Sports Complex. The Corsairs won 9-3 in the first and 4-3 in the second game to improve to 8-6 for the season.
Redwoods actually found themselves down 3-1 midway through the fourth inning in the first matchup, but responded with an offensive barrage as they scored 4 runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take the commanding 9-3 lead that they carried to the finish line. It was an impressive team victory as six different players contributed 1 RBI in the win (the rest of the runs were off errors).
“Watching this team celebrate those little victories makes all the hard days worth it,” said Redwoods coach Megan Valente. “We have so much talent and we still have work to go, but winning in a sweep is always fun. Every game it’s been somebody new stepping up to help the team win.”
The Corsairs again overcame a 3-1 deficit in the second game. After both teams scored in the second inning, Redwoods was trailing before they added 2 runs in the fourth to tie things up at 3-3. That score remained as things came down to the wire in the bottom of the seventh. With runners on first and second, Nas Hunsucker hit a ground ball to Yuba’s shortstop who then tried to convert the double play. But Hunsucker’s hustle to beat the throw at first proved to be the difference as Ashley Ballew scored the game-winning run.
It’s been a solid start for Redwoods that was punctuated with Sadie Hampton being named a Player of the Week by the California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association last week. Hampton was solid once again in the two wins over Yuba, finishing 3-for-7 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.
The Corsairs currently sit second in the Golden Valley Conference standings behind the 10-5 Butte Roadrunners. They’ll be home again for the next game as they host Mendocino for a doubleheader on Thursday.
