Gouache workshop

The Redwood Art Association Gallery is hosting a gouache workshop with artist Terry Miura from May 19 to 21.

Miura, a 1990 graduate of the Art Center College of Design — began his career as a freelance illustrator. In between illustration assignments, he painted and exhibited cityscapes, and continued his transition to becoming a full-time painter after returning to the West Coast in 1996.

Miura’s tonalist landscapes explore the relationship between memory, emotions and identity. His work was recently displayed at the Thomas Reynolds Gallery in San Francisco.

According to Miura, gouache may best be described as opaque watercolor, and is a great sketching medium both for plein air and in-studio studies.

“You may have noticed a resurgence in the popularity of gouache on social media, and be curious enough to try it,” Miura said. “This can be a difficult medium to control. In this workshop, I will break down the quirks and characteristics of this medium, and show you exactly what you need to do to overcome these obstacles, helping you to ‘tame the gouache beast.’”

In this workshop, Miura will help people get to know the medium by working indoors at the RAA Gallery in Eureka in a controlled environment using photo references.

Members and non-members are welcome. The cost of the workshop is $450 for members and $475 for non-members. Lunch is not included.

The Redwood Art Association Gallery is located at 603 F St., Eureka.

Short play fest

EXIT Theatre Arcata’s first Short Play Festival will be held June 16 to 18 and June 23 to 25 at EXIT Theatre, 890 G St. (second floor) in Arcata.

The festival received more than 100 plays from local, national and international playwrights for consideration this year. EXIT representatives have chosen 10 of these plays for the festival, which will feature local actors, directors and technicians. These plays are original works and of no more than 10 minutes in length. The festival theme is “journey,” and the chosen plays explore this theme using a variety of theatrical styles.

Featured plays for Friday and Saturday nights include “Cabfare For The Common Man” by Mark Harvey Levine of Indianapolis, Indiana; “Ladies of the Night” by Laurie Allen of Odessa, Texas; “Dog and Human” by Ellen Koivisto of San Francisco, “Friendly Skies” by Dana Leslie Goldstein of Brooklyn, New York, and others.

On Sundays, the festival will feature an eclectic mix of multidisciplinary short works ranging from puppetry to dance to solo and experimental theatrical performances.

“I look forward to bringing together and working with a team of local directors, actors, designers and technicians as EXIT Arcata launches its first festival,” said Artistic Director Christina Augello.

EXIT Theatre was founded in 1983 in San Francisco. Its mission is to provide a venue for artists to create and develop their original works. It opened its Arcata EXIT in 2020. For more information about EXIT Theatre’s current and upcoming events, visit theexit.org.
