Soroptimis­ts honor ‘Girls of the Month’

Soroptimis­t Internatio­nal of Eel River Valley has honored Leslie Castillo, Gloria Soria Herrera and Kaydence Ferguson as its Girls of the Month for March.

Castillo and Herrera were honored for their achievemen­ts in fine arts and Ferguson was honored for her achievemen­ts in school spirit.

Castillo, daughter of Abraham Castillo and Macelina Mejia de Castillo, is a senior at Fortuna Union High School. She is the photograph­er/cinematogr­apher for the MEChA club at Fortuna High and editor for the school yearbook. She is a two-time gold medal winner in the Skills USA Region 1 photograph­y contest and a gold medal winner at the state championsh­ip. Castillo is currently filming a music video for the local band The Critics.

In addition to photograph­y, Castillo has been a cheerleade­r, a member of the tennis team and participat­ed in FFA. She is vice president of the

Fortuna High Internatio­nal Travel Club, a gymnastics coach at HealthSpor­t and a religious educator for the CCD program at St. Joseph’s Parish. She plans to attend the Academy of Arts University in San Francisco and pursue a career in photojourn­alism.

Herrera is a senior at Ferndale High School. She is the daughter of Juan Soria and Hilda Herrera. She has completed many art projects for her classes at Ferndale High and is in charge of the yearbook. In addition to her art, Herrera has been involved in soccer, the Leo Club and organizing school dances. She is on the honor roll.

Herrera’s future plans are to open her own jewelry/art shop and/or bakery.

Ferguson, a senior at Fortuna Union High School, is the daughter of Morgan and Savannah Ferguson. She has been a member of the Interact Club for four years and is currently president of the club. She has been on the softball team for a year, both basketball and soccer team for three years, and participat­ed in the Eel River Winter/Summer Soccer Academy.

In addition to athletics, Ferguson is also active in FFA. She won the Greenhand Award, Star Member Award and Special Award of Excellence in Chapter Leadership. She also won the FFA Outstandin­g Scholar Award in floral design. She has been on the honor roll for her entire high school career.

Ferguson plans to attend a four-year college where she can play soccer and major in radiology.
