Book sale

Friends of the Redwood Libraries will hold its big spring book sale Friday and Saturday (April 19 and 20) from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Eureka Library, 1313 Third St.

Friday's sale is for members only, with memberships available at the door. Saturday's sale is open to everyone.

Thousands of books will be available to purchase. This sale will be especially strong in the area of history and there will also be many cookbooks, as well as CDs and DVDs. Many of the books on offer are in “like new” condition.

Cash sales are welcome; small bills are appreciated. Credit cards will be accepted for purchases over $5, including memberships. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the entire Humboldt County Library system.

Zero Waste

Zero Waste Humboldt will hold a “Zero Waste Market” Saturday, April 20, in the Arcata North Coast Co-op parking lot. The event — celebrating Earth Day — takes place from 2 to 6:30 p.m.

There will be vendors, food, nonprofit booths, a reuse popup, face painting, a children's clothing swap, plant swap, CRV donation drop-off site and more.

Birding tour

The Redwood Region Audubon Society will offer a free guided birding tour along the Eureka Waterfront Trail on April 21 from 9 to 11 a.m., with leader Ralph Bucher.

This relatively urban trail offers the potential to observe species abundance and diversity compared to many more remote locations. Keep an eye and ear out for cormorants, loons, grebes, and even otters diving for their meals in the bay alongside the trail. This walk is on a flat, paved trail that is wheelchair accessible. Email Ralph to sign up for this field trip at thebook@reninet.com.

Birding event

Celebrate Earth Day with some evening birding and botanizing. Join the Redwood Region Audubon Society and trip leader Janelle Chojnacki in Blue Lake on April 22 from 5:50 to 7 p.m. in front of the Mad River Brewery.

From there, everyone will walk across the Mad River bridge, along the levee or through the cottonwoods — whichever area looks the birdiest. Participants will look for sparrows, wrens, swallows and raptors, and perhaps some nesting killdeer. Along the way, attendees will also be looking at plants and discussing how they tie into the birdlife of the area.

Hospice fundraiser

Hospice of Humboldt will hold a “Magic of Compassion” fundraiser May 18 at 5 p.m. at the Sequoia Conference Center 901 Myrtle Ave., Eureka.

The event includes magic performances, dinner and drinks and a celebration of kindness and community. This event provides an opportunity

to show support for Hospice of Humboldt without the traditional silent or live auction.

Tickets are $100 each. Visit https://www.hospiceofhumboldt.org/magic for more information.

All donations stay local and help Hospice of Humboldt continue to provide this essential care in the community. Donations can be made online at www.hospiceofhumboldt.org, by phone at 707-4458443 or mailed to 3327 Timber Fall Court, Eureka, CA, 95503.

Hospice of Humboldt has been serving families locally since 1979, has a staff of 100 employees and works with over 75 volunteers.
