YOUR SAY: 2017 YEAR-END REVIEWS

- LETTERS LETTERS@USATODAY.COM

The year 2017 was an exercise in awfulness. From having personally lived through Hurricane Irma to having watched one horrible event after another unfold on the news (e.g. Las Vegas, Charlottesville, Va., Sutherland Springs, Texas), I have never felt less confident in this country’s future.

As a country, we seem to have abandoned all reason and have chosen to resort to a sort of tribal mentality where the only truth we accept is what we hear from our preferred news outlets. If we choose to continue to blame others who are not like us for the very real challenges we face rather than come together, I fear that we will all end up living on the wrong side of: “United we stand, divided we fall.” Sean Craft Wesley Chapel, Fla. Overall, it was good year, not great. Good:

The economy: The stock market boom helped 401(k)s, mutual funds and consumer spending. Gross national product growth is spectacular; unemployment is down, significantly among blacks and Hispanics.

The crippling of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, which significantly reduced its influence worldwide.

Our Cabinet may be the best ever with Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and others.

Approved tax cuts that will benefit over 80% of taxpayers and further improve the economy.

Someone willing to finally deal with the big problem of North Korea. Not so good:

The resistance movement: We should work together to improve our country. The Russia probe hurts us all, and it’s bad when half our country wants President Trump to be punished.

A news media that acts like an antiTrump mob. Americans deserve a fair, honest and unbiased media.

Liberal “cleansing” at colleges that seek to suppress free speech and opposing viewpoints.

Trump tweets that attack U.S. citizens. He should be a uniter and a healer. Dorane Strouse Homosassa, Fla.
