Kimmel tells Trump: ‘Do something’ about guns

- Erin Jensen

Jimmy Kimmel has had enough. During his Thursday monologue, the ABC late-night host was overcome with emotion while talking about Wednesday’s shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., which resulted in 17 deaths.

Kimmel said he agreed with President Trump’s sentiments that “no parent should ever have to fear for their sons and daughters when they kiss them goodbye in the morning.” This year’s returning Oscar host even offered Trump a suggestion to help solve the prevalent problem.

“Tell your buddies in Congress, tell Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell and Marco Rubio — all the family men who care so much about their communities — that what we need are laws, real laws that do everything possible to keep assault rifles out of the hands of people who are going to shoot our kids,” Kimmel said. “Go on TV and tell them to do that.

“That is a perfect example of the common sense you told us you were going to bring to the White House,” Kimmel continued. “It’s time to bring it. We need it. Tell these congressmen and lobbyists who infest that swamp you said you were going to drain, force these allegedly Christian men and women who stuff their pockets with money from the NRA year after year after year to do something now. Not later, now.”

Kimmel encouraged Trump to halt any conversations about it being “too soon” to be talking about gun control.

“Children are being murdered,” he said while fighting back tears. “Do something. We still haven’t even talked about it. You still haven’t done anything about it. You’ve literally done nothing. Actually, you’ve done worse than nothing. You like to say this is a mental health issue, but one of your very first acts as president, Mr. Trump, was to actually roll back the regulations that were designed to keep firearms out of the hands of the mentally ill. You did that.

“I agree, this is a mental illness issue,” Kimmel said, “because if you don’t think we need to do something about it, you’re obviously mentally ill.”

Kimmel urged viewers who agree with him to visit everytown.org and contact representatives. “If they don’t listen, vote them out of office.”
