8-million-year-old elephant-like remains found in Macedonia

- From staff and wire reports

Paleontologists are excavating the remains of a prehistoric elephant found in Macedonia.

Scientists estimated the animal would have weighed about 10 tons and been about 50 years old at the time of death, roughly 8 million years ago in the Miocene epoch. By comparison, that’s a little less than twice the average size of an adult male African elephant today.
