Other views: The opioid crisis is far from over in America

-

Sam Baker, Jonathan Swan, Axios:

“President Donald Trump will sign Congress' recently passed opioids legislation, which, among other things, eases limits on Medicaid funding for addiction treatment and expands access to medication-assisted treatments similar to methadone . ... The most important thing, (experts) say, is more money for treatment programs. Congress and the White House have provided more than $6 billion so far, but the crisis is still far from over.”

Deseret News, editorial:

“The federal government can and should take appropriate measures to combat the influx of dangerous drugs, but the real work of rehabilitation, education and crisis care happens at the state and local level. (Lawmakers) would do well to put the money into the hands of local leaders, rather than putting everything into federal programs.”

German Lopez, Vox:

“Last year, Trump ordered his administration to declare a public health emergency over the opioid epidemic . ... ‘We cannot allow this to continue,' Trump said at the time . ... A new report from the Government Accountability Office looked at the results of that emergency declaration. The report found little came out of the declaration. ... While Congress' extra billion dollars here and there are good, experts estimate that potentially tens of billions more are needed each year.”
