Frittelli victorious, earns Open trip
South African rallies to win John Deere Classic
South African Dylan Frittelli won his first title on the PGA Tour with a 2-shot victory Sunday in the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Illinois.
Frittelli fired a final-round 64 and earned an invitation to join the PGA Tour through the 2020-21 season in the process, along with 500 FedExCup points and the $1.08 million first prize.
In addition Frittelli will be hopping on board a private jet from the Quad Cities area to Northern Ireland, where he’ll play in the British Open. The 148th Open Championship begins Thursday at Royal Portrush. Frittelli also qualified for the 2020 Masters, Players Championship and PGA Championship with the win.
Russell Henley finished second at TPC Deere Run.
Frittelli’s bogey-free final round followed rounds of 66, 68 and 65. He began the final round two shots back.
Rookie Collin Morikawa finished tied for fourth at 17 under. That was good enough for Morikawa to get his full-time PGA Tour card for next season.
Senior Players: Retief Goosen birdied the final two holes to win the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, for his first PGA Tour Champions title. The 50-year-old Hall of Famer broke a tie for the lead with a 15-foot putt on the par-4 17th and made a 10-footer on the par-4 18th for a 2-under 68 and a twoshot victory over Jay Haas and Tim Petrovic.
LPGA: Sei Young Kim won the Marathon Classic for her second LPGA tour victory of the season, making five consecutive birdies in a mid-round burst and shooting 6-under 66 for a twostroke victory over Lexi Thompson.
American Century Championship: Former Cowboys quarterback and current CBS NFL analyst Tony Romo successfully defended his title in the 2019 American Century Championship, winning with a score of 71 points. Former MLB All-Star Mark Mulder (61) finished second, followed by tennis Olympic medalist Mardy Fish and another former MLB All-Star Derek Lowe (57).
