Debate featured a bully and lots of chaos

- LETTERS LETTERS@ USATODAY. COM

I was sickened by Tuesday night’s debate. President Donald Trump was representing what is ugly, out of balance and out of control in this country.

Trump was bullying, disgraceful, rude and classless. It was obvious that he was playing to his white supremacist base.

The first presidential debate of 2020 did not reflect well on either candidate. Chris Wallace let the debate get out of hand. The Democrats call for “civility” in politics. Calling the president a clown and a liar really displayed civility on the part of Biden. Trump was way out of hand, too. Most people who watched this farce must have been left scratching their heads. I know I was. Tom R. Kovach

How do parents explain such channeling of intense negativity and violence by the president? Biden’s steadiness and willingness to address the people was a sea of comfort against the onslaught coming at him, the moderator and us. The values Trump conveyed only added to the erosion of the democracy he was elected to preserve. Jeffrey Ainis

Public safety is one of the most important topics of this presidential cycle and Trump is the one who can ensure it for Americans. America has experienced severe riots and property damage. Trump has been steadfast in his opposition to lawlessness. Biden could not name a single police group that endorsed him when asked during the debate. In spite of serving as vice president for eight years, Biden failed to stand firmly with the police.
