Ohio State jumps to No. 3

- Eddie Timanus

For the first time, the Big Ten has actual results for the voters in the Amway Coaches Poll to consider this season, to the benefit of some and the detriment of others.

The main beneficiary is Ohio State. The Buckeyes ran away from Nebraska and vault to No. 3, retaining two firstplace votes. Ohio State leapfrogs No. 4 Notre Dame, despite the Fighting Irish’s dominant road win at Pittsburgh, and No. 5 Georgia.

Penn State was not as fortunate after falling in overtime at Indiana in its opener. The Nittany Lions drop 10 spots to No. 17 and must now rebound quickly with Ohio State coming to Happy Valley next weekend. Wisconsin and Michigan gain three positions each to No. 11 and No. 14, respectively, after impressive first efforts.

Clemson, meanwhile, retains the No. 1 spot followed by second- ranked Alabama. The Tigers overcame some miscues to pull away from Syracuse and continue to lead the poll with 52 first- place votes. The Crimson Tide handled Tennessee on the road and now have eight first- place nods.

Indiana joins the poll at No. 19, its highest ranking since 1993.
