Payment on the way to seniors

Some Social Security recipients still waiting

- Jessica Menton

Stimulus payments are set to be processed this weekend for Social Security recipients and other federal beneficiaries who don’t normally file a tax return, the IRS said Tuesday. The agency projects that the majority of these payments will be sent electronically and received by April 7.

The move comes as many Social Security recipients and other beneficiaries still haven’t received a third round of stimulus payments that amount to $ 1,400, according to the chairs of the House Ways and Means Committee. The Social Security Administration sent information to the IRS that helped clear the way for almost 30 million people to receive their checks, lawmakers said Thursday.

After receiving data from the Social Security Administration last week, the IRS began to review, validate and test tens of millions of records to ensure eligibility and proper calculation of Economic Impact Payments, the agency said.

“If no additional issues arise, the IRS currently expects to complete that work and to begin processing these payment files at the end of this week,” the IRS said in a statement.

Because the majority of these payments will be disbursed electronically through direct deposits and payments to existing Direct Express cards, the IRS confirmed they will be received on the official payment date of April 7.

Which federal beneficiaries are included?

Many federal beneficiaries who filed 2019 or 2020 returns or used the online Non- Filers tool last year were issued Economic Impact Payments, if eligible, during the past three weeks, the IRS said.

The latest update applies to Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, and Railroad Retirement Board beneficiaries who didn’t file a 2019 or 2020 tax return or didn’t use the NonFilers tool.

What about VA beneficiaries?

The IRS is continuing to review data received for Veterans Affairs benefit recipients and expects to determine a payment date and provide more details soon. Economic Impact Payments for VA beneficiaries who don’t regularly file tax returns could be disbursed by mid- April, the agency said.

How can I track my payment?

You can use the Get My Payment tool on IRS. gov. It is updated for eligible individuals once their payment is processed, according to the IRS. The tool won’t be updated until this weekend with information for federal beneficiaries expecting payments next week, the agency added.
