3 top receivers to skip workouts amid talks
The San Francisco 49ers, Tennessee Titans and Washington Commanders are going to be without their top wide receivers during offseason programs.
San Francisco’s Deebo Samuel, the Titans’ A. J. Brown and the Commanders’ Terry McLaurin are not expected to participate in offseason workouts, according to people with direct knowledge of the situation. Those people spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.
All three star receivers are on the final years of their contracts and are seeking extensions. They will be unrestricted free agents at the conclusion of the 2022 season.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the news.
The Titans and Commanders started their offseason programs Monday. The 49ers’ first day begins Tuesday.
Samuel is yearning for a lucrative long- term deal that will place him among the highestpaid wide receivers in the league. Brown and McLaurin are also seeking hefty raises as they are the best receivers on their respective teams.
Samuel’s 1,405 receiving yards in 2021 ranked fifth in the NFL. He also rushed for eight touchdowns – an NFL singleseason record for a wide receiver. Brown eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards in two of the last three seasons, while McLaurin led Washington in receiving yards for three consecutive seasons.
Samuel and Brown are owed a little over $ 3.9 million in 2022. McLaurin is due $ 2.7 million in base salary this season. All three wideouts are on their rookie deals and can’t receive a fifthyear option because they weren’t first- round picks.
