It’s uncertain how long unsigned S Eric Berry will be skipping camp. Because no deal was reached by the July 15 deadline, his only option is signing his $10.086 million tender as the team’s franchise player.

Berry, who returned from a bout with cancer, was the league’s comeback player of the year.

Said QB Alex Smith, “He’s the heart and soul of this team. He’s one of our main leaders in the locker room, on the field. ... Over the years, stuff happens, and this will all get worked out in time. When it does, he’ll be ready.”

Rookie watch: The three quarterbacks battling for what likely will be two spots behind Smith are Aaron Murray, Tyler

Bray and rookie Kevin Hogan (fifth round). Said coach Andy

Reid of Hogan, “We’re excited about him; the more reps he gets the better he is. He’s a smart kid. We know he’s a good athlete with good body strength. He picks things up well, and from here it’s just a matter of getting him those reps and then getting him in the game to build that confidence.”

Noteworthy: The first overall pick in the 2013 draft, OT Eric

Fisher, signed a four-year contract extension worth a reported $48 million with $22 million in various guarantees. ... Three stalwarts with knee issues opened camp on active/physically unable to perform list: RB Jamaal

Charles and OLBs Justin Houston and Tamba Hali. ... WRs Jeremy Maclin, Chris Conley and Albert Wilson worked out together five days a week at the team facility from the end of minicamp until the start of training camp.
