Philadelphia Eagles

-

The Eagles entered last season convinced Cody Parkey would be their placekicker after his strong rookie season in 2014.

Then he suffered a torn groin muscle in the third game and was lost for the season. In his place,

Caleb Sturgis was solid after missing an extra point and a chipshot field goal in his first game. For the season, he made 18 of his 22 field goal attempts.

Now both are in the Eagles’ training camp, fighting for the job.

Sturgis surged ahead during the camp’s first extensive specialteams session, making all five of his field goal tries while Parkey missed two in a row.

Rookie watch: QB Carson Wentz, the No. 2 overall draft choice, hasn’t looked the part of a franchise quarterback so far in camp. His passes have fluttered, prompting coach Doug Peder

son to work with the rookie on his throwing mechanics. Pederson said Wentz at times was “a little tall” and “a little jumpy, a little hoppy,” affecting his passes, and he needed to keep his feet “tighter to the ground” to give him a more stable base. Noteworthy: Last season, the Eagles led the NFL with 37 dropped passes, and so far the prospects for improvement don’t look good. According to NJ.com, receivers dropped 25 of the 213 balls thrown at them during team drills. ... Likely starters RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) and G Bran

don Brooks (hamstring) missed the first week of camp. CB Nolan

Carroll had a strong opening week before leaving Saturday’s practice with a sore ankle.
