New York Giants
Veteran WR Victor Cruzo-
pened camp without restriction. He called that “a huge accomplishment.”
Normal seems spectacular because Cruz hasn’t played a game since Oct. 12, 2014, when he suffered a torn patellar tendon. He missed last season with a torn fascia in his calf.
For now, he’s working with the second team as Odell Beckham Jr. and touted rookie Sterling
Shepard hold the top two spots, with Cruz joining them in threereceiver sets.
Cruz thinks he’ll show he can once again be the flashy playmaker who posted back-to-back 1,000plus-yard seasons in 2011-12.
And he says he’ll know when he’s made it all the way back.
“I think it’s going to take one play,” he told reporters. “One of those plays where I feel like I make a move and I make something happen and I catch the ball.”
Rookie watch: The Giants’ top three draft choices — CB Eli Apple, Shepard and S Darian
Thompson — have been working on the first team. Thompson looks like the frontrunner among a
crowd of contenders for the starting free safety spot. Apple has been playing on the outside opposite free agent signee Janoris
Jenkins, with veteran Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie at
times manning the slot.
Noteworthy: Ben McAdoo
called the offensive plays the past two seasons as coordinator, but he remained coy about whether he or new coordinator Mike Sulli
van would handle that duty now that McAdoo’s been promoted to head coach. ... DTs Damon Har
rison (knee) and Jay Bromley (ankle) opening camp on the physically unable to perform list, leaving undrafted rookie Greg
Milhouse on the first-team defense with starter Johnathan
Hankins for the first practice. The Giants quickly signed veterans Davon Coleman and Jer
melle Cudjo to battle Milhouse for a roster spot.
