Minnesota Vikings

-

While much of the offseason focus was on the arrival of top pick Laquon Treadwell and expected growth from Stefon Diggs to bolster QB Teddy Bridgewater’s receiving arsenal,

Charles Johnson opened camp running with the first team as he looks to rebound from a disappointing 2015 season.

The Vikings entered last year excited about Johnson’s potential after he boosted the passing game late in 2014. But aside from his clutch grab on the final drive in Week 8 that spurred Minnesota to a comeback victory in Chicago, he was largely absent in the offense.

“He’s healthy, No. 1,” explained offensive coordinator Norv Tur

ner, before pointing out how Johnson’s vertical speed and size set him apart in the wide receiver corps. “He had a rib issue that was a real issue, and unfortunately, in this league, when you miss some time and a guy steps in like Diggs did, then your opportunities are limited. … But he’s had a really good offseason, and he looks ready to go.”

Rookie watch: Treadwell also earned praise from Turner. “He was running very fluid and had a much better feel for the routes,” Turner said. … Coach Mike Zim

mer has opened up the strong safety competition to all, including seventh-rounder Jayron

Kearse, whose 6-4, 216-pound frame is tough to miss.

Noteworthy: After missing 2015 with multiple back surgeries,

John Sullivan opened camp as the first-string center. Zimmer hopes to have his starting five settled “as soon as possible.” … Zimmer isn’t worried about the offseason hamstring pull that has limited RB Adrian Peterson.
