Atlanta Falcons
Coach Dan Quinn received a scare on the first day of camp when WR Julio Jones went to the sideline after tweaking his left foot, leaving free agent signee
Mohamed Sanu to play the role of the team’s No. 1 receiver.
That might be a stretch for Sanu, who at best was Cincinnati’s No. 3 receiver last season while catching zero touchdown passes in a limited role (33 receptions, 394 yards).
Atlanta is banking on Sanu being the perfect complement for Jones, who had 136 catches for 1,871 yards and eight touchdowns. The Falcons signed Sanu to a five-year, $32.5 million contract.
Jones’ injury is not thought to be serious. He worked on a limited basis during the weekend.
Rookie watch: Two draft picks on defense have an excellent chance of starting and seeing significant playing time — SS
Keanu Neal and ILB Deion Jones. Neal projects to get on the field in nickel situations.
ILB De’Vondre Campbell ,G Wes Schweitzer and TE Austin Hooper also appear to be in the mix for playing time.
Noteworthy: Veteran WRKR-PR Devin Hester was released on the eve of training camp, but he isn’t necessarily done playing football. Hester said he would not attempt to resume his career until fully recovered from offseason surgery on his right big toe. He gives himself an October deadline to play this season before seriously considering retirement. ... Speedy Tevin Coleman, part of the team’s 1-2 punch at running back with Pro Bowler Devonta
Freeman, might be a consideration to return kicks.
