Arizona Cardinals

-

For the second year in a row, QB Carson Palmer entered training camp with a painful memory of the season that got away.

Unlike last year, he didn’t have to do any kind of medical rehab to get over it.

Palmer, 37, came into this year’s camp with a different kind of offseason healing. Having played his worst game of the season in the NFC Championship Game, Palmer was just as eager to get back on the field.

Palmer knows he’s running out of chances, but he’s also certain he still has a few left in him.

“I still love it,” he told reporters in Arizona. “I still love that stuff. I love Mondays and Tuesdays getting game plans and breaking down other teams. All that stuff, it’s not work to me.”

Rookie watch: First-round pick DT Robert Nkemdiche sat out the first day of camp while wearing a walking boot. CB Bran

don Williams, a third-round pick, has been working with the first-team defense while Arizona veterans deal with injury issues.

Noteworthy: Longtime Arizona DT Darnell Dockett signed a one-day contract with the team and retired as a Cardinal. ... S

Tyrann Mathieu and CB Justin Bethel, two keys to the Cardinals defense, opened camp on the physically unable to perform list. Mathieu is likely to be out for three weeks, though both are expected to be back before the season opener. ... The Cardinals added veteran LB Donald Butler to the mix. He spent five seasons with the San Diego Chargers and should back up Kevin Minter at inside linebacker.
