Cleveland Indians

-

The Indians made a big move Sunday when they acquired lefthanded reliever Andrew Miller from the New York Yankees in a trade for four prospects.

Miller is expected to be the closer. Right-hander Cody Allen, who had converted 20 of 22 save opportunities this season at the time of the trade, said he is willing to take a lesser role if the team added a premier reliever.

Manager Terry Francona said the move shows the AL Centralleading Indians are serious about trying to win their first World Series title since 1948.

“If you don’t think other teams wanted him, you’re crazy,” Francona said. “They (the Indians’ front office) went and got the best there is. There’s no better message.”

Left fielder Michael Brantley took swings against a pitching machine last weekend for the first time undergoing a procedure July 21 to break scar tissue in his right shoulder, which was operated on last November. There is no timetable for his return.

Right- handed hitting outfielder Brandon Guyer was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday in a trade for two minor leaguers and will platoon in right field with Lonnie Chisen

hall. Guyer was hitting .344 with four home runs in 82 plate appearances against left-handed pitchers this season.

Utility player Jose Ramirez will become the regular third baseman after Juan Uribe was designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for Guyer.
