Texas Rangers

-

Sensing a chance to play deep into October, the Rangers obtained outfielder/designated hitter Carlos Beltran from the New York Yankees and catcher

Jonathan Lucroy and reliever Jeremy Jeffress from the Milwaukee Brewers at the trade deadline.

Beltran, a nine-time All-Star, will help compensate for the loss of Prince Fielder to neck sur- gery. Right-hander Dillon Tate, the fourth overall pick in 2015, was among three minor league pitchers sent to the Yankees.

To get Lucroy, a two-time AllStar, and Jeffress, the Rangers relinquished two former firstround picks, outfielder Lewis Brinson and right-hander Luis Ortiz, and will give up another player to be determined.

Before the trade, the Rangers were getting a huge boost from first baseman Mitch Moreland, whose home run Sunday, his 18th of the season, gave him seven since Fielder’s last game (July 18).

What’s the difference? Moreland is staying on the ball longer, and it’s finding his barrel.

“We know Mitch is obviously capable of this kind of a run,” manager Jeff Banister said. “He has responded with power.”

Right- handed reliever Matt Bush’s innings are being monitored. Bush, a hard thrower who has been among the team’s surprise contributors, had reached a career-high 502⁄ innings through 3 Sunday.
