New York Jets
QB Bryce Petty, a fourthround pick from Baylor in 2015, played the second half against Washington, completing 16 of 26 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns. The performance might have thrust Petty into a competition with Geno Smith for the backup job.
Smith says he is more comfortable in his second season under offensive coordinator Chan Gai
ley, but his preseason stats don’t support him (14-for-27, 116 yards, one touchdown, one interception). Smith’s experience (31 regular-season games to Petty’s zero) still gives him a slight edge.
It appears the Jets will keep four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, becoming the first team since the 2013 Washington Redskins to do so. Last season, the Jets were one of 17 teams to open the season with three quarterbacks. Rookie watch: Undrafted WR Robby Anderson had an impressive game with six receptions for 131 yards. One of his catches was for a 42-yard TD. Another went for 50 yards. The Jets love Anderson’s size (6-3) and speed. He and fellow rookies Jalin Mar
shall and Charone Peake are fighting for the final two receiving spots.
Noteworthy: RT Breno Giacomini remains on the PUP list with a back injury, and there are concerns he might not be able to start the season. Ben Ijalana and Brent Qvale have alternated in his place. … Sixth-year DT Jarvis Jenkins, signed in the offseason, will provide quality depth to a line that features Muhammad Wilkerson, Leonard Williams and Sheldon Richardson.
