Tennessee Titans

-

The Titans are serious about this new dedication to their “exotic smashmouth” offense, proving so again by trading away 2015 second-round pick WR Dorial Green-Beckham for mammoth RT Dennis Kelly last week.

In Tennessee’s preseason loss to the Carolina Panthers, Kelly cleared big holes for rookie RB

Derrick Henry, who ran for 31 yards on five carries, while

DeMarco Murray picked up 20 yards on five carries. Both have looked sharp throughout training camp and the first two preseason games.

QB Marcus Mariota also was crisp against Carolina, completing all but one of his 10 passes, which was intercepted. He also threw a touchdown pass to Harry Douglas. Rookie watch: Eighth overall pick Jack Conklin played much better in his second preseason game, particularly in run-blocking plays, but his pass protection has a ways to go when it comes to picking up blitzes and holding the edge. … Fifth-round pick WR

Tajae Sharpe picked up six more receptions for 68 yards, bringing his two-game preseason total to eight catches for 103 yards. … S

Kevin Byard, a third-round pick, led the team with four solo tackles but fumbled (and recovered) one of his attempted punt returns as he battles for that job.

Noteworthy: In the crowded pool of backup running backs,

David Cobb consistently picked up yardage but lost a fumble. … WR Justin Hunter was held without a catch in the first preseason game but bounced back for seven targets and four receptions for 54 yards against Carolina. … WR Kendall Wright (hamstring) remained sidelined, and TE Delanie Walker had one catch for 9 yards. … The Titans allowed a long touchdown on the opening drive for a second consecutive week.
